Berks County Residential Center focus of verbal sparring between activists, commissioner

Editorial: News of manufacturing park comes at welcome time

The news of a plan to build a manufacturing complex near Reading Regional Airport could not have come at a better time.

When Gov. Tom Wolf's visited Bern Township to announce the plan along with $2.5 million in state funding for it, our community was desperate for some positive economic news. Just a few days earlier, city officials announced that Pepsico Inc. would be closing its facility on Centre Avenue, costing the area nearly 100 jobs. It's hard to imagine a better time to learn that an estimated 500-600 new jobs are on the way.

Gov. Tom Wolf announces grants during visit to Reading Regional Airport

For more than a decade, Berks County officials and legislators have had high hopes for the vacant chunk of land nestled between Reading Regional Airport and the Schuylkill River.

The Berks County Industrial Development Authority bought the 155-acre plot from the Bern Township airport in 2008, as the airport faced financial troubles.

Berks County gauging public on $5 fee for bridge repair

Berks County's bridges are getting older and the county's transportation cash doesn't stretch far enough to keep up with all the needed repairs, county officials said.

That's why they're considering a $5 annual vehicle registration fee to finance repairs to county-owned bridges.
