County approves Boyertown rail crossing repairs

The railroad crossing on East Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown will be repaired and improved as part of the resurrection of the Colebrookdale Spur, the Berks County commissioners said Tuesday.

Commissioner Mark C. Scott, board chairman, said Amtrac Railroad Contractors of Maryland Inc., Hagerstown, Md., will receive a $91,300 contract to make the repairs.

Berks County prepares for costly upgrade to emergency communications system

A military helicopter was flying overhead on June 11, its occupants trying to spot the body of a boy who drowned while swimming near the confluence of the Schuylkill River and Tulpehocken Creek.

City police and firefighters on the ground couldn't communicate with the pilot or county emergency units helping at the scene. The antiquated radio system that prevented them from talking to one another made recovery of the boy's body more difficult.

Berks County commissioners expect to approve delinquent tax payment option

From the Reading Eagle (6/16/2010):

Property owners who have hit hard times and are having trouble catching up on back taxes soon will have a payment option to save their properties from a tax claim sale.

The Berks County commissioners Tuesday said they plan to adopt a policy that allows residents with unpaid taxes for 2008 to immediately pay 10 percent of the amount owed and pay the balance in equal payments over 11 months.
