9 to lose jobs at Berks County Youth Center

Nine people will lose their jobs at the Berks County Youth Center at the end of the week when a program designed to help juvenile offenders become responsible, law-abiding adults is discontinued.
The county commissioners said the decision to end the Priorities Responsibilities Enhancement Program, or PREP, will save taxpayers money by eliminating 13 positions. Some positions were vacant, and some have been changed.

Some Berks boroughs not returning water, sewer studies to planning commission

Some Berks County boroughs are choosing not to turn in their sewer and water studies for the Berks County Planning Commission's 2010 Sewer and Water Regionalization Study, citing either lack of money or time.
Officials in Strausstown, which has a new sewage system, decided at last Monday night's borough council meeting that they could not afford to pay their engineer to complete the study.

Ex-court administrator excited to be helping vets in Berks

Some form of the word excite comes up often when the topic is the appointment of Dale G. Derr as Berks County's new director of veterans affairs.
One reason is a military career that spanned more than 20 years. Another is his previous experience as county court administrator from 2001 to 2006.
