County-offered prescription program saving money

Since January 2007, Berks County residents have saved $375,485 on the cost of their prescription drugs by participating in a special discount card program provided by the county commissioners.

Commissioner Christian Y. Leinbach said participants now are saving an average of 27 percent to 28 percent.

County OKs lease with railroad to reopen Boyertown-Pottstown line

The way was paved for the historic 8.6-mile Colebrookdale Spur to begin hauling freight once again when the Berks County commissioners Thursday approved a lease with Eastern Berks Gateway Railroad.

John K. Howell, Eastern Berks Gateway Railroad president, said he expects the line from Boyertown to Pottstown to be operating by Oct. 1.

U.S. approves industrial authority's plans to purchase 155 acres at airport

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved the Berks County Industrial Development Authority's plans to purchase 155 acres at Reading Regional Airport, but the authority still needs to raise the $2.6 million to buy it, authority Executive Director Thomas C. McKeon told the county commissioners Tuesday.

The authority intends to build a research park on the site, which the FAA had to agree was unsuitable for aviation.
